Our morbid fascination with doomed love has even given rise to an entire archetype, dedicated to the romance of dying: The Sick Girl. Other characters inevitably fall for her, and usually, so does the audience. But while the Sick Girl seems to bring positive representation to people living with illness, it’s a trope that often traffics in cliches, and it creates unrealistic expectations that can be harmful.
