Mariana de Jesus (Paula Neves) was born and raised in a convent. On the outside she is a tomboy. But she loves to dance, escaping in the middle of the night with her friend São (Teresa Tavares) to go clubbing. In one of these trips, Mariana meets Pedro (José Carlos Pereira), son of Álvaro Salgado (Alexandre de Sousa) and Helena Brandão Salgado (Manuela Carona), owners of Quinta de Nossa Senhora do Carmo. This farm had once been the scene of forbidden love. Álvaro, the only son fell in love with the housekeeper, Rosário (Sílvia Balancho) and she got pregnant. His father joins in business with Vicente Brandão, to save the farm arranging to marry his daughter Helena with Álvaro. Rosario finds out and runs away on a stormy night. Years later Álvaro started to take care of the business. Despite the children Pedro and Marta Brandão Salgado (Sara Moniz), the marriage to Helena, an alcoholic, is a disaster. Álvaro has an affair with Andreia Barroso (Vera Alves), the secretary.
