Flashbacks are one of the most misunderstood, yet constantly used, screenwriting tools. As I work with screenwriters 1on1, I find consistent use of flashbacks and confusion about how to correctly integrate them into a story.

Saw is a film that uses flashbacks consistently to tell its story in a non-linear way. Some of the flashbacks work perfectly, others not so much.

Today I am going to show the good and the bad of the flashbacks in Saw to give you some clear direction on correctly using flashbacks in your screenplay.
