In the mid 1990's, Sony entered the console wars with Nintendo and Sega, but lacked a mascot to compete with video game stars Mario and Sonic.
Meanwhile, independent developer Naughty Dog, headed by Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin, began toying with the idea of developing a 3-dimensional Donkey Kong-esque platformer for Sony's PlayStation.
Naughty Dog brought on cartoon animators Charles Zembillas and Joe Pearson, and character concept began by choosing a relatively cute, obscure animal from down under.
Sony loved the demo tape, and a deal was signed for Universal to publish the game. As E3 drew closer, the team finally choose a name for their hero: Crash Bandicoot. However, Universal’s marketing team wanted the name Wez Wombat and didn't much care for the bandicoot’s sexualized girlfriend Tawna. Naughty Dog told universal if they wanted that name, they could finish development themselves. And with that, Crash Bandicoot was born.
Crash took E3 by storm, effectively becoming the Playstation Mascot and one of the highest sold PlayStation titles to date.
