In Disney’s The Little Mermaid, queer themes and parallels are visible under the surface (and the sea). Because mermaids exist between worlds, they have always had an analogous relationship with queerness, gender fluidity and transition. Given the way Ariel changes her body to express her true identity, there’s a convincing reading of her story specifically mirroring the trans journey.
