After Lorne Lanning worked with 3D animation in Hollywood, he knew that it would be the future of gaming. He went to Hollywood visual effects producer Sherry McKenna to see if she would help co-found a video game company together. Although hesitant, she eventually agreed and in 1994, Oddworld Inhabitants opened its doors.
Lanning pitched a story to investors that would later become Abe's Oddysee. They liked the idea of a game with more movie-like qualities; one that was story and character driven. Abe’s Oddysee was not your typical game; it didn’t center around the Super Hero-esque archetype that would punch and shoot their way to victory. They didn't want to use a hero that people dreamed of being, but rather one that they could relate to.
Oddworld Inhabitants would live or die with the success of this game. Even though investors loved how different this game was, there was a large concern on how actual gamers would receive it. Would players want a game where they would care about the hero and story, or did they just want a gun and highscore?
In 1997, their fears were put to rest. Abe's Oddysee was released, captivating audiences with immersive story and character design, and paving the way for multiple sequels and spin offs while cementing narrative storytelling as a feature and not an obstacle in video games.
Have fun!
