In 1993, Ryan Bryant founded Take-Two Interactive in New York City with the hopes of becoming the very best game company, like no one ever was. Take-Two would mostly port games made by other companies, ironically becoming a game company like everyone ever was, until acquiring subsidiary developer BMG interactive, which reformed into Rockstar Games. One year later, five members of the now-defunct Rebel Boat Rocker assembled under Randy Pitchford to become the dominant force in porting by taking on Half-Life, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Halo, Counter-Strike, and Brothers in Arms. The resulting company was known as Gearbox Software.
The success of these ports eventually led to sci-fi shooter project called Borderlands, which was picked up by 2K and released in 2009 to unprecedented financial success. Gearbox stuck with 2K for the sequel which released in 2012 as one of the only games to ever rival 2K's Grand Theft Auto series in terms of sales - but in their hubris Gearbox decided to pick up Duke Nukem Forever and Aliens: Colonial Marines, two complementary mistakes that had led to a large round of layoffs only four years prior.
Both titles released to a near-universally negative response, with the development for the former pulling resources and time from the latter to create two very, very bad experiences. Despite this, Borderlands continued to make the money back, and now Gearbox has teamed up with Telltale to release the story-driven Tales From The Borderlands, driving forward the kind of success that might make a man forget about Duke Nukem Forever and Colonial Marines.... if only he could.
Have fun!
