If your mugshot, your Velvet Room cell, and strangers whispering about your criminal record weren’t subtle enough, the Persona 5 protagonist’s high school, Shujin Academy, has the same pronunciation as the Japanese word for “Prisoner.”

In the Shibuya subway station, there are Easter egg posters featuring characters from Persona 4: Dancing All Night, and their busy idol careers. Apparently, Kanami has just dropped a new single, and if you go on a date in Harajuku, the protagonist can get Rise’s Sapphire poster for his room.

Persona high school emblems have been said to resemble car company logos. Art Director Shigenori Soejima claimed it was merely a recurring coincidence after Gekkoukan High School looked like the BMW emblem. French manufacturer Citroën’s logo seems to be the new coincidental resemblance for Persona 5, though Morgana’s catbus form also echos the Citroën H Van from the same company.

The protagonist’s Persona, Arsene, is inspired by French author Maurice Leblanc’s fictional gentleman thief, Arsene Lupin. Though he lives in a coffee shop called Cafe Leblanc and there are many French influences, like a French Tarot card deck, his persona was originally set to be Mephistopheles, a demon from German folklore, before they decided Arsene was a better fit.

Morgana’s code name is Mona. Though Morgana becomes irritated when called a cat, Mona is also the name of a cat-like creature created with Shift_JIS art.
