In 1980, The World Health Assembly announced smallpox had been eradicated. Vaccine facilities were shut down, but labs in the United States and Russia stored samples of the disease and hoped that won’t totally backfire on them. It probably will.
21 years later, the U.S. performed Operation: Dark Winter; an exercise to examine the challenges of biological attack on American soil, and naturally, the country was woefully unprepared. In response, President Bush signed Directive 51 and The Strategic Homeland Division was born, a group of independent agents who, in the event of biological attack, would stay behind to prevent the fall of society and rebuild the city.
Then, smallpox mysteriously reappears and decimates New York City. With pestilence, paranoia and fear gripping the city, the Division is activated. With the help of The Joint Task Force made up of cops, firefighters and the like, you must stem the destruction of groups like The Rikers, former Riker's Island inmates; The Cleaners, sanitation workers violently purging the city of the disease; and the Last Man Battalion, a rogue unit killing anyone in their path to seize control. You'll fight your way through the city, get shot in back for your loot in the Dark Zone, and reveal the terrifying truth behind the outbreak.
