In 1998, Halo was originally designed to be a real-time strategy game, similar to Warcraft, where players would build structures at their base, mass produce Spartan units, and ride weird Chocobo-looking creatures called Blind Wolves.
When Halo 2 multiplayer servers were discontinued in April of 2010, approximately 500 players tried to keep their consoles on for weeks to continue playing with each other. 12 noble players lasted until May before experiencing technical malfunctions or were simply booted out of Xbox Live.
It was to be revealed that the Forerunners were an ancient race of humans and that both races were one and the same. This is implied in the earlier games when Guilty Spark refers to Master Chief as a “forerunner”, but was eventually retconned when the series expanded its scope and 343 Industries took over for Bungie as developer.
