Stan Lee suggests that Ant-Man never became as popular as other heroes because when he was small, artists wouldn’t draw Ant-Man next to regular sized objects. So with no sense of scale, Ant-Man looked like a regular guy in an underwear costume which did away with the appeal of a hero who could shrink in size.
Though Hank Pym was the original Ant-Man, Scott Lang was chosen to be the star of the film because Pym's history of mental disorders and spousal abuse were deemed less family-friendly. He even went as far as to attack his wife, Wasp, with a can of Raid!
In the late 1980s, an Ant-Man film was pitched by Stan Lee to then Marvel parent company New World Entertainment, but nothing came of it due to a film in production with a similar premise. That film was Disney's Honey I Shrunk the Kids.
