Transcript:
In the early 90's the fighting game genre exploded into the mainstream after the release of Street Fighter 2. With a desire to develop original games, Midway Games, known for arcade game localization, merged with Williams Industries, teaming artist John Tobias with programmer Ed Boon on a fighting game based on the film, Universal Soldier. Despite the film license falling through, development continued using digitized photographs to create realistic sprites. Tobias and Boon paired this with buckets of animated blood and released the smash hit, Mortal Kombat!
Gamers lined up at the arcade, but many parents were appalled by the bountiful gore and savage fatalities. When the game was ported to home consoles, concerned parent groups fought for censorship. Super Nintendo colored the blood grey to resemble sweat and removed some fatalities, while Sega Genesis included a code for players to unlock the blood and gore. Naturally, the Sega version outsold its tame Nintendo counterpart and a bloodier sequel was in high demand.
Over the years, fighting games have come and gone, but Mortal Kombat continues to call gamers back to a simpler time when after school, a good friend would rip your spine from your mutilated body.
Have fun!
