Former arcade game developers Tim & Chris Stamper were running their third party company Rare and happily made games for Nintendo like Slalom for the Vs System and NES in 1987. After making several other titles for Nintendo, including Captain Skyhawk, Wizards & Warriors, and Battletoads for the NES and Game Boy, Rare decided invest in new, advanced graphics systems.
The Stampers took this new tech and pitched a boxing game to Nintendo. The company was so impressed with the work that they bought a 49% stake in Rare, making them a second-party developer. To cement their new partnership, the Stampers expressed a desire to make a new Donkey Kong game.
With Nintendo's blessing, a small team was assembled to reinvent the character and gameplay. Rare's innovations included not only giving Donkey Kong a three-dimensional makeover, but observing real-life animals like horses to base the animations off of. Donkey Kong Country was made largely without Nintendo's interference, though the game was eventually scaled down in difficulty and a few moves such as Donkey Kong's hand slap were added at the eleventh hour after Shigeru Miyamoto offered suggestions. Donkey Kong Country was released in 1994 to solid reviews, ushering a new franchise of dopey animals and terrible raps about them.
Have fun!
