Hanley and the men are taken prisoners. When the encampment comes under fire. The Germans get all but Saunders out. Hanley's men use the artillery barrage to make their escape. When they get far enough away Lt. Hanley does a head count. When they find out that Saunders is not with them the men want to go back to look for Saunders. Lt. Hanley won't let them. Saunders follows them with both his hand badly burnt by the fire that burned the ropes he was tied up with. When they raid a German camp looking for food, Kelly gets killed while he is putting on boots to replace those a German soldier took from him earlier. They get back to their lines with a delusional Saunders not far behind carrying a dead German thinking it is his brother.
