As a kid, San Francisco seemed like the birthing ground of video game greatness. In and around the city, talented video game developers gathered to make magic.

Today, San Francisco, and its surrounding cities, are a dominant force in both game development and games journalism. But if a city — or now, the entire state of California — has so much power over an industry, is it in danger of inadvertently creating a monoculture?
