To create new fatalities, NetherRealms locks team members in a room and has them act out fatalities, picking those that get the strongest reactions. Then, Ed Boon, still after 20 years, maps out fatalities with stick figures because he is embarrassed by his drawing ability.
The gory sound effects in Mortal Kombat X were made by squishing a gooey substance in a bowl with a toilet plunger and smashing various fruits, vegetables and nuts with a hammer.
In response to issues with Mortal Kombat 2011's online game play, the developers programmed Mortal Kombat X with the "Quitality" which will instantly kill the character of anyone quitting an online match abruptly to avoid losing.
