Transcript:
In an era dominated by id Software's Doom and Wolfenstein, publishers were looking to invest in the next great first-person shooter, but Parallax Software instead created Inferno, an ambitious space combat game that offered 360 degree movement. The project was picked up by Apogee, but they pulled their funding seven months later. Fortunately, Interplay decided to invest in Inferno, which later became Descent.

Descent was successful and made Parallax a good deal of money, prompting Kulas and Toschlog to move the company but they couldn't agree where. Instead, they split the company in half - some left with Toschlog to form Outrage Entertainment, the rest stayed with Kulas and became Volition. Volition went to work on Descent: FreeSpace - The Great War and its sequel, FreeSpace 2, which became their highest rated game ever. Volition was later acquired by THQ at which point they began to work on Red Faction.

Red Faction was well-received, but its sequel did not enjoy the same success, putting the franchise on ice for the next couple years. After growing to over 100 employees, Volition decided to focus their efforts on the open-world genre which had only one other competitor - Grand Theft Auto. Volition settled on making Bling Bling, a gang simulator of sorts, but it was a complex game with a questionable subject matter that nearly tore the company apart. Despite internal struggle, Saints' Row was finally released to critical and commercial success and quickly spawned three sequels. Now, having proven themselves twice over, Volition has become an established and respected developer... partly because they pulled this thing off.

Have fun!
