Cairne Bloodhoof, the old, strong and wise high chieftain of the tauren, made his first lore appearance during the start of the Third War, where Thrall and his people, and the trolls of the Darkspear Tribe that he'd rescued from the Darkspear Isle on the way there, landed on the coast of The Barrens upon arriving at Kalimdor for the first time.
Cairne introduced himself, after observing the young Warchief and his warriors fight off a band of Centaur, the long hated enemy of the Tauren people. He noted the orcs bravery, savagery and valor right away. After brief conversation, Thrall warned Cairne of a marching army of the 'horsemen', being the centaur, heading north. Cairne quickly rallied his warriors, and had Thrall follow him to his village, which inconveniently enough, was to the north.
Thrall and Cairne, along with their warriors, arrived just in time to defend against the centaur marauders. After the battle, Cairne thanked Thrall for his aid, and told Thrall about his peoples' situation, that the centaur had driven off all the prey in the Barrens, making it impossible for the tauren to survive in that sort of land, being unable to hunt or grow anything. He also told Thrall, that he had to move his people north, to the rich grasslands of Mulgore, but he feared he could never reach that sanctuary with the fast centaurs chasing him and his people. Cairne struck a deal with the young Warchief, Thrall had to aid Cairne in reaching Mulgore, and in return he would tell him how to reach the Oracle, who was to reveal the destiny of the orcs to Thrall.
Cairne and his people reached Mulgore with the help of the orcs, and further rewarded them, with fine kodo beasts to ride upon. Many days after, Cairne met up with Thrall once again, at the foot of the Stonetalon Mountains, stating that the debt he owed the orcs could only be repaid in blood and that he would help Thrall in his quest of reaching the Oracle.
Cairne and Thrall used the wild wyverns in their battle against Jaina Proudmoore's forces, which held the orcs from the peak of the mountain. Cairne and Thrall though, made it through Jaina's forces and found the Oracle who turned out the be the last guardian, Medivh.
Medivh warned them about the incoming threat of the Burning Legion, and Cairne fought bravely along with humans, orcs, trolls, dwarves and other races whom he'd never encountered before, to ensure the safety of Azeroth.
