Anime has plenty of instances of treating same-sex relationship with respect! From Sailor Moon Crystal's enduring relationship between Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune that survived censorship, to the subtext brought to the forefront in Kill la Kill's Ryuko and Mako. There are more overt examples as well, like Utena and Anthy in Revolutionary Girl Utena, and the many characters of Cardcaptor Sakura (particularly Yukito and Touya). Then, of course, there's Attack on Titan's Ymir and Krista which feels like it does not need to draw much attention to their relationship.
