2017 marked the death of the ill-fated Wii U -- a perceived stopgap system that somewhat underwhelmed but seriously undersold. Coupled with the advent of mobile gaming, the company recorded its largest loss in its 100 year-plus history, stunning Nintendo... though only momentarily.
A plan for Nintendo’s future utilizing mobile technology, new hardware, and our favorite Nintendo heroes was already in full swing. While Shigeru Miyamoto focused on Super Mario Run and a Universal theme park, younger Nintendo staff were spearheading not only a new system, codenamed NX, but also an entirely new gaming experience.
Nintendo’s resume included gaming innovations like the touch screen with the DS, gaming outside your home with Game Boy, and motion control with the Wiimotes, but scheduling time for gaming was different than the era of the NES. To accommodate lifestyles of Japanese students playing together after school and those in the west with schedules that varied day to day, the head of development, Satoru Iwata emphasized the importance of pulling the NX out anywhere-- not just for convenience, but for connecting with others.
Sadly, Iwata passed away in 2015, but the team forged ahead, officially announced the NX as the Nintendo Switch in October 2016 and soon thereafter shocked the industry with a March 2017 launch date. But will shipping the Switch so soon skyrocket it to Wii-levels of popularity or doom it to Wii U-depths of mediocrity? Let’s just say Breath of the Wild better be fucking* good. Have Fun!
