Transcript:
When James Cameron wrote the original screenplay for Terminator, he was living out of his car, but still sold his screenplay to Producer Gale Anne Hurd for $1 with the stipulation that he be allowed to direct the film.
James Cameron has said that the idea for the film came from a dream he had of a robotic skeleton, but he knew he would never get a large enough budget for a picture set in the future, so he added the time-travel element to keep the story set in the present and therefore cheaper to film.
Even in post-production, the studio pushed for the original film to end after the tanker explosion, a happier ending in which all of the human characters would have survived, but Cameron fought for the inclusion of the final scene in the factory, notably the emotional climax of the film and the haunting vision of the walking robotic skeleton.
