Is being self-centered a bad thing? Not according to the TikTok trend of Main Character Syndrome. So, how can you become the protagonist of your story? Fundamentally, Main Character Syndrome is acting as though your life is a movie, and you’re the star. It’s about living life cinematically, romanticizing even the smallest of moments, and curating the best parts of your story.
But Main Character Syndrome can also become toxic. It might involve casting others around you as minor characters in your Oscar-worthy life -- and writing them into your story without much regard for their feelings and inner worlds. On the surface, it sounds a lot like a narcissistic personality disorder. But the reason so many are embracing it is that (in moderation) it can actually be positive and empowering, especially for those not used to feeling like a main character or being encouraged to think of themselves that way.
