The story of Dragon Ball is originally based off the Chinese fable, Journey to the West, which is about a monkey warrior who fights villains with a power pole and flying cloud. Eventually, creator Akira Toriyama just turned Dragon Ball into a pure fighting manga and began to forget things he had already drawn, so he had to keep writing himself out of corners.
Toriyama is a fan of using themes to name his characters. Saiyans are named after vegetables, Frieza’s family after refrigerators. Even Bulma’s family is named after underwear.
In the world of Dragonball, death is a regular occurrence. Through the entire series, only a small group of characters never slipped off the mortal coil: Hercule, Supreme Kai, Pan, Bra, Uub, & Fortuneteller Baba.
BONUS FACT: The famous quote from Vegeta “It’s over 9000!” is actually a mistake -- it was misspoken in the English dub! The correct translation of Goku’s power level is “8000.”
