About Legacy of Kain:
Legacy of Kain is an action-adventure genre video game developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix Europe. It was initially launched on the PlayStation and has since been launched on Windows, Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, Xbox and Nintendo Gamecube. The game is focused on Kain who is on a quest to restore balance to the world. The game was praised for its high quality visuals and narrative and sold more than 3 million copies as of 2007.
Backstory:
The Legacy of Kain takes place on Nosgoth whose health is tied to the Pillars of Nosgoth which are preserved by the Circle of Nine. In Nosgoth there were three main races: Humans, Vampires and Hylden. The vampires and humans worshipped the Elder God and the wheel of fate while the Hylden wanted to remove themselves from the influence of the Elder God. In light of this, the Vampires went to war against the Hylden in which the Vampires used their magic to create nine pillars used to banish the Hylden.
The Hylden were then able to curse the Vampires with immorality and sterility which turned the Elder God against them. Most of the Vampires eventually committed suicide and were hunted by the humans. The nine pillars became the responsibility of humankind who were appointed to protect the pillars.
Peace was brought onto the lands of Nosgoth during this time until one of the pillar guardians was murdered which sent Nosgoth into chaos. Kain, a human nobleman, is murdered and resurrected as a vampire tasked with restoring order to Nosgoth.
Gameplay:
The Legacy of Kain games are all based on an action-adventure genre with action gameplay, puzzle-solving and role-playing and exploration elements. Players are able to solve puzzles and defeat bosses while gaining new weapons and abilities. The main characters, Kain and Raziel both must fight enemies in order to restore health by consuming blood (Kain) or getting souls (Raziel).
Transcript:
In ancient Nosgoth there were three predominant races; humans, vampires and hylden. While the vampires and humans worshipped the deity known as the Elder God and his wheel of fate, the hylden were more technologically inclined and sought to remove themselves from the Elder God's influence. The vampires treated this as an act blasphemy and declared and all out war against the Hylden. Using their magic, the vampires were able to erect nine pillars to banish the Hylden to another dimension, and then created a weapon known as the reaver to defend Nosgoth should they ever return.
This backfired for the vampires as the Hylden were able to curse them with immortality and sterility which placed them outside of the Elder God's wheel of fate. Miserable, most vampires committed suicide while the rest were hunted down by humans. The responsibility of the pillars fell on humankind and nine human guardians were appointed to the circle of nine to protect the pillars.
There was peace for many years until one of the pillar guardians was murdered. This act corrupted the rest of the guardians sending Nosgoth into chaos. Thirty years later, Kain, a human nobleman, is murdered and resurrected by a necromancer as a vampire. Now tasked with cleansing the corrupted guardians, it’s up to Kain to restore order to Nosgoth.
