Grommash Hellscream was leader of the Warsong clan of Orcs throughout the entirety of the First and Second wars, and quite a bit of the third. An Orc Chieftain of legend, he was the uncontested leader of the Warsong Clan, said to have usurped the role from the previous Warchief. Grom was the first of the Orcs to fall for the lure of demonic power offered by Mannoroth. He just happened to also be the first to accept the concept of murdering the Draenei.
He and his clan were luckily spared the defeat of the Second War thanks to some manipulation by Gul'Dan. Afterwards, Grom and his Warsong clan were used to great effectiveness in the aftermath of the Second War, performing hit and run raids on human outposts in search of magical artifacts. After the destruction of the Dark Portal, the Warsong Clan was stuck in Azeroth, they were forced to scratch out a living on the outskirts of human civilization for nearly 15 years.
Finally one day a young headstrong Orc named Thrall found Grom, and impressed by Thrall's , strength, courage, and mercy, he taught Thrall all he could of Orc battle strategy and society. Eventually, the humans looking for Thrall came too close, and he was forced to separate from Grom, taking his necklace as a sign of their friendship.
After some time came the Third War, and with it Grom's destiny. After a rough trip across the Great Sea, the Warsong Clan reunited with Thrall's New Horde. However Grom was feeling tinges of his old blood lust due to the presence of Mannoroth in Kalimdor. Grom attacked many human settlements on his way with Thrall up Stonetalon Peak. Thrall, angered by his recklessness sent Grom off to Ashenvale to collect lumber and start a strong settlement for the Horde.
While there they were assailed by the Night Elves and eventually, Cenarius himself. Distraught that his Clan could not even injure the Demi-God, he began to look for help elsewhere. His troll witch-doctors sensed a powerful force deep in the forest, and Grom set out to claim its power for his own. Little did he know that Mannoroth had poisoned the water with his demonic blood.
Empowered by the evil demonic energies, the Warsong slayed Cenarius, and decimated the Night Elf troops sent after them. Later, Thrall learned of this corruption from Medivh. Jaina Proudmoore, new ally to the Orcs and Tauren, set out to find Grom, and using a spell by Jaina, purify his spirit of the demonic taint. After a tough battle against their own people, Thrall's forces finally succeeded in capturing Grom's spirit.
Purified by Jaina's spell, Grom felt he owed a debt to Thrall for causing a second curse upon his people. Together they went to what is now Demon Fall Canyon and had an epic duel against the great Pit Lord Mannoroth. Grom's great axe, Gorehowl tore through the Pit Lord's breastplate, but Mannoroth had the last laugh. His fiery demonic innards spewed forth like a volcano at Grom, incinerating him to within an inch of life.
As he lay dying, he gave his triumphant last words to Thrall. "Thrall... the blood haze has lifted... the demon's fire has burnt out in my veins....I...have...freed...myself..."
"No old friend... You've freed us all."
