John Wayne was a through and through true red white and blue American hero, war is ugly and not in the least entertaining so if you want to make a movie that doesn't make any money nor entertain the public while at the same time drive down military recruitment then by all means do a true to forum blood guts and body parts movie also in real life war the good guy (hero) doesn't always make it back such as John Wayne in Sands of Iwo Jima if I remember right they actually used some real battle footage in the movie

Lots of patriotism and guns. The Vietnam war was not in any way, like this picture depicts. It was worse. But John Wayne makes good showing the military in a good light. I like this period picture for a look at the uniforms and equipment. The plot is a bit much and acting is weak, but I still highly recommend this movie.

One of the best John Wayne movies from the golden age of movie making. A
real classic about the Vietnam War and the role of the US Army green berets
in the conflict. Very tame by today's standards, but good plot and lots of
action. Great weekend movie.
