About this movie

From the acclaimed director of SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, PROOF stars Oscar® winners Gwyneth Paltrow (Best Actress, SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, 1998) and Anthony Hopkins (Best Actor, SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, 1991), along with Jake Gyllenhaal (JARHEAD, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN) and Hope Davis (ABOUT SCHMIDT). It's a powerful story of a young woman haunted by her father's past and the shadow of her own future. Catherine (Paltrow) has devoted years to caring for her brilliant but mentally unstable father, Robert (Hopkins), a mathematical genius. But when his genius slips away, he leaves behind a mystery that affects her life ... and her own sanity. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play.

Undoubtedly this was a great stage production in its original incarnation; unfortunately, as a screen production, it falls woefully flat.. It's character-driven scenes are the only elements that make this oh-so-unsuspenseful drama even remotely watchable -- but ultimately, they fail to save this mediocre film. It's not even bad --- just unmemorable. Anthony Hopkins carries a mediocre script and Jake Gyllenhaal renders an authentic performance , and if you are fans of these actors, you'll find their performances amply satisfying. Ultimately, neither the dialogue nor the cinematography can save a film that feels as though it was hastily released on the heels of "A Beautiful Mind" in order to extract a quick buck from a hungry demographic searching for a cerebral film. There are far better "math" movies to be found.

I just wish the ending was better, love it, I wouldn't recommend to see the some say nasty scenes if you are 9 or 10 years younger..
