I will never understand why this movie is regarded as one off the best sci-fi movies ever. It was just boring with some terrible acting by a very decent cast. I can tell that anyone giving this a glowing review is living some kind of delusion, because it is kind of awful. Story that literally goes no where and characters that overact to fill in the voids. If you haven't seen this yet, give it a go. Then you can see how delusional everyone from the 70's really is. The drugs must have been great

Very cheesy by todays standards, but all scifi movies in the 70's were cheesy. Some may see it as slow and boring but the point was the story, the mental and physical journey of the protagonist, the build up to the end. This is a thought provoking drama that had aliens in it but they were not "the" story, with limited action, no laser fire, no fighting, no end of the world invasion. Was a contrast to the original Star Wars movie of the same year.

I don't understand the appeal of this movie. Aliens show up, sooner guy goes crazy and abandons his family, figuratively, them literally. other than the wonder of alien contact, it's hard for me to understand the appeal.
