Pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim returns to his Argentinean homeland to explore the origins of tango and the legend of one of the form's pioneers, Carlos Gardel. Blending footage of glamorous early 20th-century Buenos Aires with performances by Rodolfo Mederos, Hector Console and Plácido Domingo, the film provides a cogent introduction to tango styles and techniques as well as a look at the communities from which the art form sprang.
