Transcript:

The 1993 SNES game Star Fox was a huge hit both critically and commercially, and plans were quickly hatched for a follow-up. The original dev team, Argonaut software, was recruited once again to work on the sequel with Nintendo.

Star Fox 1 had been the first consumer product with a 3D graphics accelerator in the form of the Super FX chip. Star Fox 2 would have utilized an even more powerful version of this chip, the Super FX 2 chip. This was the same chip was used in the game Yoshi’s Island.

For the sequel, the developers opted to mix it up with the ability to choose different paths, rather than the linear level arrangement of the first. Also, the game would have random rogue-like encounters so that every playthrough of the game would be unique and different.

Star Fox 2 was going to really push the aging SNES hardware to its limits and be even more impressive than its predecessor. However, by the time that the game was in beta by 1995, the Sega Saturn and Sony Playstation systems had already successfully launched.

Not wanting to put this old gen 3D against these next gen 32-bit systems, Nintendo decided to pull the plug on Star Fox 2, despite the fact that the game was 95 percent complete.

Argonaut software nevertheless decided to finish the game and it even went through Nintendo’s Mario Club QA testing. But apart from some leaked ROMs, it would seem that Star Fox 2 would never see an official release.

However, with the announcement of the SNES Classic, Nintendo surprised everyone by including Star Fox 2 as one of the 21 games on the retro console. It only took 22 years! Have fun!
