On Decemeber 14th, NASA will begin accepting applications for astronauts—the application will be available on the USA Jobs web site. The basic requirements to qualify for the position aren't as unattainable as some may believe. Some of the basic requirements to join NASA's elite astronaut corps include: having a bachelor's degree in engineering, biological science, physical science, or mathematics, plus 3 years of related professional experience, or at least 1,000 hours as pilot of a jet aircraft.
There are currently 47 active astronauts in the space agency's corps. In a press release, NASA said, "The next class of astronauts may fly on any of four different U.S. vessels during their careers: the International Space Station, two commercial crew spacecraft currently in development by U.S. companies, and NASA’s Orion deep-space exploration vehicle."
NASA expects to announce selected candidates in mid-2017.
