Because of shareholders, we might have never gotten the XCOM we know and love today. Boo, investors!

Transcript:
When UFO: Enemy Unknown's release was delayed, the game was cancelled by the shareholders, but the development team neglected to tell designer Julian Gollop and hid the game's continued development until it was far enough long that there was no choice but to release the game.
The original game UFO: Enemy Unknown released with an unnoticed bug that switched the game's difficulty setting to Easy after the first Battlescape mission. When players complained the game was too easy, even on “Superhuman,” MicroProse increased the difficulty setting for the sequel, Terror from the Deep, and it was way harder than anyone anticipated.
UFO: Enemy Unknown was created by Nick and Julian Gollop and was initially conceived as a sequel to their 1988 game, Laser Squad. However, developer MicroProse wanted the new game to take place on a larger scale than Laser Squad and that lead to the addition of an alien invasion and XCOM.
The cinematic after the first UFO is shot down in XCom: Enemy Unknown shows the latitude and longitude of the crash site, though in real life these are the coordinates for publisher 2K Games in California. Similarly, the Alien Base cinematic shows coordinates that correspond to the Firaxis Game Studio in Maryland.
The original 1994 UFO: Enemy Unknown found it's inspiration for XCOM from the 1970 British television series UFO, created by Gerry Anderson. The show featured an XCOM like group called SHADO, that protected the Earth from Alien attackers.
