Unlike many animation directors, Hayao Miyazaki painstakingly reviews each of the tens of thousands of frames in his movies, often redrawing them to fit his vision. This process, while tiresome, has led Miyazaki to declare that no one creates animation like him because...well, no one would want to!
During talks with American distributors about releasing Totoro internationally, there was a concern that the scene where the two daughters are bathing with their father would be lost in translation. Studio Ghibli was vehemently against cutting any scenes following the disastrous editing of Nausicaa, and Totoro was released uncensored.
Though not explicitly stated in the movie, Mei and Satsuki’s mother likely suffered from a disease similar to spinal tuberculosis, the same disease that afflicted Miyazaki’s own mother, forcing her to live in a hospital in the country during his childhood. Fortunately, she recovered and lived a long life.
