The story about the creation of the Kirby video game franchise makes for some of the greatest in video game history. Lore in a minute and NintendoFanFTW brings you the story about the development behind the Kirby video game series by Masahiro Sakurai. The first game created in the Kirby franchise was Kirby's Dream Land which initially launched for the Game Boy handheld console in 1992. Kirby's Dream Land originally launched in Japan on April 27 1992 and was subsequently launched in North America on August 1, 1992.

History of HAL Laboratory:
While spending their free time playing video games, college students Masahito Tanimura and Satoru Iwata founded HAL Laboratory with some friends originally creating scanners and trackballs. At HAL Laboratory, they eventually started porting popular games such as Pac Man and developing puzzles and games for MSX Computers. After years of successful projects and developments, a 19 year old HAL Laboratory employee, Masahiro Sakurai, began developing a simple game aimed at beginners. He designed the main character, originally called Twinkle Popopo, who later became the famous Kirby character.

Creation of the Kirby Franchise:

At the time, HAL Laboratory had amassed a 5 billion yuan debt before the video game creator Nintendo made an investment to make Kirby a household name and save HAL Laboratory from financial ruin. . After the creation of Kirby's Dream Land, HAL laboratory launched Kirby's Adventure, giving Kirby the power to swallow enemies and gain their abilities, which brought the Kirby franchise to grow into one of Nintendo’s most famous video games.

Transcript:

In 1980, college students Masahito Tanimura and Satoru Iwata spent their free time playing video games at the Seibu Department store. Renting a nearby apartment together, they founded HAL Laboratory with some friends. Originally making scanners and trackballs, they eventually ported games like Pac Man and developed puzzle games for MSX Computers.

When Nintendo took the world by storm, the guys at HAL called everyone they knew to get an interview. Humbly taking an assignment to fix an overdue Pinball game, they eventually earned more lucrative assignments.

In the early 90's Masahiro Sakurai, a 19 year old HAL Laboratory employee, began developing a platform game especially for beginning gamers. He designed a simple character they soon called Twinkle Popopo, but Nintendo insisted on renaming the little bubble Kirby.

Unfortunately, after developing Kirby's Dream Land, HAL Laboratory was 5 billion yen in debt. Seeing the promise of the young developer and its pleasingly simple character, Nintendo invested in the company, saving it from financial ruin. In return, HAL Laboratory developed the critically-acclaimed sequel, Kirby's Adventure. Giving Kirby the power to swallow his enemies and copy their abilities, they cemented the pink protagonist as one of Nintendo's most beloved characters.
