In 1990, Blue Sky Productions and Lerner Research, the former specializing in role playing games and the latter in Chuck Yeager-branded flight simulators, merged into Looking Glass Studios to avoid a legal battle with Vectorman developer Blue Sky Software. The company then began work on Dark Camelot, but reworked the idea to focus on breaking and entering when their engine handled stealth better than combat. Thus the Thief series was born.

Unfortunately, all of Looking Glass' games were met with more critical praise than financial success, and the studio was shuttered. Most of the team was shuffled into Ion Storm's Austin branch, where they released Dominion: Storm Over Gift 3 on the same day as Blizzard's demo of StarCraft, a game that absolutely crushed them in the market. Their next attempt was John Romero's Daikatana, which enjoyed incredible hype until a print ad ran featuring Romero over the tagline, "John Romero's about to make you his bitch." The resulting negative coverage of the ad, compounded by constant delays and bad gameplay, turned Daikatana into one of the biggest financial failures in the history of the industry, which didn't help when Deus Ex, Thief II, and Thief: Deadly Shadows were once again met with high critical praise and low sales.

The final nail in the coffin was very expensive Anachronox which forced Ion Storm to close only a month after the game's release. Publisher Eidos Interactive held on to the Thief IP, where they developed the fourth installment and unwittingly fell into direct competition with the series' original creators and current Dishonored developers Arkane Studios. Because that definitely won't end badly.
