She paved the way for strong, independent women on screen and captured the era’s spirit of freedom and optimism. But behind the iconic smile was a life beset by tragedy, illness and addiction. On January 25th, 2017, Mary died of a cardiac arrest in Greenwich Hospital, Connecticut – at the age of 80.
