Mascalucia, Sicily, 1956: Ersilia Romeo (Virna Lisi) is a modern, dreamy woman who longs for a different life, far from the Sicily where she lives.
When her father-in-law Rocco (Marcello Perracchio) dies, she convinces her husband, Pasquale Fortebracci (Gerardo Placido), to sell the deceased patriarch's inheritance and leave Sicily to start a new life in the north with his two sons Tonio (Gabriel Garko) and Santi (Giuseppe Zeno), in the hope of getting rich. In Turin, Nino Vitale, Ersilia's cousin, and Giuseppe Bastianelli, known as Pippo 'o Calabrese (Giancarlo Giannini), a respected and powerful man in the neighborhood, provide Pasquale with a house and a store. In order to buy the goods for the store, Pasquale gets into debt with the owner Don Pippo, and the latter, with the help of the mafia boss Don Rosario Liberati (Luigi Maria Burruano), has the store robbed before it opens.
