Rue Bennett (Zendaya), a 17-year-old college student, returns home after a stint in a rehab facility; upon returning home, she meets Jules Vaughn (Hunter Schafer), with whom she forms a strong bond. Their world is disillusioned. Rue has not learned the lessons of her treatment and continues to destroy herself with drugs. She distances herself from reality by abusing these products and faces her anxiety and depression. Her family is weakened by the illness of the patriarch.
Nate Jacobs is a jock who can't handle his violence. These reactions hide a rather great sexual frustration. He takes his frustrations out on Jules, who is the new girl in school. Jules, on the other hand, is more interested in someone other than Rue. She is looking for less conventional adventures. She meets a father on an app who is Nate's father.
