In 1867, Boston physician Michaela Quinn (Jane Seymour), colloquially known as "Dr. Mike", heads west to the small Wild West town of Colorado Springs to open her own practice.
She struggles to adapt to life in Colorado, with the help of Cheyenne friend Byron Sully (Joe Lando). After being bitten by a rattlesnake, Charlotte, the village midwife, asks Michaela, on her deathbed, to look after her three children: Matthew (Chad Allen), Colleen (Erika Flores, then Jessica Bowman) and Brian (Shawn Toovey).
Mike moves to Colorado Springs and makes it his mission to convince the townspeople that a woman doctor can practice medicine successfully.
