Revisiting the Musical Streets of the 70s with 'The Get Down'

'**The Get Down**' is an American musical drama television series set in the South Bronx region of New York City during the late 70s. This Netflix original is a mythic saga narrating how a city on the brink of bankruptcy gave birth to hip-hop, punk, and disco. It tells this riveting story through the lives and music of South Bronx kids who changed their city—and the world—forever.

The series revolves around a rag-tag crew of teenagers who had nothing but each other for shelter. One notable character is Ezekiel Figuero, played by Justice Smith (known for his roles in 'The Thundermans' and 'Genera+ion'), a young poet with dreams larger than life itself. He forms an alliance with Shaolin Fantastic (played by Shameik Moore), an aspiring DJ known for his graffiti artistry. Together they form 'The Get Down Brothers,' aiming to make waves in the upcoming music industry.

In addition to these two dynamic characters, we also meet Mylene Cruz (Herizen F. Guardiola), Zeke's love interest who aspires to be a disco singer but constantly finds herself at odds with her pastor father. There are also other compelling characters like Ra-Ra Kipling (Skylan Brooks), Boo-Boo Kipling (Tremaine Brown Jr.), Clarence 'Cadillac' Caldwell (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and Francisco 'Papa Fuerte' Cruz (Jimmy Smits). Each character brings their unique flavor to this vibrant ensemble cast.
