Some thoughts about horror games:
I really do think this is the best survival horror game recently released by a publisher. Sad thing is, this game was released in 2008. I would assume this game didn't have the success that was anticipated since the devs dropped the Siren project and moved on to make Gravity Rush (2012) - Which is a great game by the way, but I'd prefer to see another of the Siren game series. Survival horror games have dropped significantly over the last 5-8 years because they don't sell as well as others. Basically it's a genre that focuses on the 18+ audience and excludes the entire CoD, FPS audience who is basically 12-17 year olds - The newer Resident Evil games pretty much confirms this since they are more focused on action and bro-op instead of horror these days.
Indie games however have made a large push on the genre lately and it looks like in 2013 we might have the best year of horror games since this decade - Lets hope it lasts!
Some thoughts about Siren Blood Curse:
Though this game is confusing, that is also what makes it interesting - It draws you in wanting to know more and more. In my opinion a horror game should be too scary to play but the story would make you force yourself almost to actually want you to finish - (Not all the time of course). Siren does deliver a story unlike most horror games I've seen, it really drags you in and you can't wait to finish another episode to see how the story continues.
The story, the sounds, monster design - it's all done amazingly. My only problem with this game is that it's so difficult that it stops being a horror game. You start focusing on finish each task so much that it hinders you from taking in the atmosphere or even caring that much if your character dies. Though sometimes it works great and Siren really makes your heart start pumping, a lot! But too many times I found myself "tryharding" my way through the game and missing out on what the game actually does so well. It made it into a really fun and rewarding game, but not the type of game that I wanted.
The guys behind this game obviously knows horror and I have huge respect for that.
8/10? - Yes lets go with that.
