Transcript:
Valve level designer and texture artist Chris Ashton jumped at the chance to work on one of his favorite games when Valve bought Counter-Strike. Chris then introduced his friends Mike Booth and Phil Robb to the folks at Valve and Mike founded Turtle Rock Studios, an independent studio where they could work on Valve's Counter-Strike titles.
After-hours, they modded Counter-Strike for their own amusement, painting zombie character skins, redesigning levels, and editing game code to allow large numbers of bots to attack the players. They shared this mod with Valve and they were hooked. The game wasn't pretty, but it was the precursor to Turtle Rock's first original game, Left 4 Dead. Valve eventually bought Turtle Rock and they officially became Valve South, but after Left 4 Dead's release, they were shut down and invited to move to the Seattle offices.
Wishing to stay in California, Chris and Phil reopened Turtle Rock Studios as an independent studio. They worked with Valve on Left 4 Dead DLC, then shopped their next project, the cooperative multiplayer game "Evolve." Original publisher, THQ, went bankrupt, but fortunately Take-Two Interactive bought "Evolve", becoming the first game ever to win both the E3 and Gamescom "Best of Show" awards in the same year.
Have fun!
