Transcript:
The Donkey Kong we know and love is actually not the same protagonist from the original arcade games. That ape is Donkey Kong’s pappy, Cranky Kong, who is now older and watching over his younger relative. In the game's intro, Cranky can be seen on the red construction girders of the original games.
Nintendo Mastermind Shigeru Miyamoto once surprisingly knocked Donkey Kong Country's game design by saying "Donkey Kong Country proves that players will put up with mediocre gameplay as long as the art is good." He later apologized for the statement explaining that while making Yoshi's Island, he was pressured to make the game more like DKC.
Diddy Kong was originally going to be Donkey Kong Jr, who had also appeared in the original arcade games. Nintendo worried the appearance was too different and forced Rare to rename him. Before arriving on "Diddy," potential names were "Diet DK," "DK Lite," "Titchy Kong" and "Dinky Kong".
