Transcript:
In 1988, after having just finished working on Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders, Ron Gilbert was working at LucasFilm Games. Enthralled by both Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean ride and the historical fiction novel On Stranger Tides, Gilbert began writing a series of short stories. LucasFilm Games liked Gilbert’s pitch, but it wasn't until after he and his teammates worked on the Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade game that he was able to assemble a team for “Mutiny on Monkey Island.”
Gilbert hired Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman, who would go on to lead Double Fine and Telltale games. Moving away from the frustrating deaths of other adventure games of the time, they made it impossible for the player to die, and encouraged exploration. The three leaders had vastly different styles of writing and humor, so Gilbert assigned them to head individual sections based on the type of humor needed.
The Secret of Monkey Island, the first game in the eventual franchise, was released in 1990 to stellar reviews and eventual cult status, and cemented the game's leaders as icons in the adventure game scene.
