Rue Bennett is a teenager suffering from anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and bipolar disorder. She returns home from rehab. But she immediately buys new drugs from her friend and drug dealer, Fezco. She runs into Nate again, whom she hates after a sexual assault in her freshman year of high school.
Jules, meanwhile, is a transgender girl who has just moved to town after her parents' divorce. She attended summer school and enjoys spending time on dating apps. She accepts a date that night with an older man.
Maddy has just been dumped by Nate and would love to get back at him at a party thrown by famous college soccer player, Chris McKay.
Jules prefers to go on her date and sees an older man not knowing that he is actually Nate Jacobs' father.
Rue returns home late at night and her mother forces her to take a drug test: to pass, Rue acquires clean urine by enlisting the help of her childhood friend Lexi, who is not addicted to drugs.
Nate exaggerates about the sexual past of Cassie, Lexi's older sister, whom McKay is dating.
They all end up at the party with the intention of coming out "grown up".
