Transcript:
As a young man, Gabe Newell attended Harvard University but quickly realized he was destined for greater things - and these things could not wait. Steve Balmer convinced Gabe to join Microsoft, which at the time was on its way to becoming a powerhouse software company. After dropping out of Harvard, Gabe helped produce the first three iterations of Windows which took the world by storm - or so he thought.
Microsoft was the number 2 most installed software on PC's, second to.. DOOM? id Software's DOOM was dominating the software world with thousands opting to remain on the DOS platform in order to melt away demons with a BFG. Why, when Microsoft with millions of dollars and a fortress teeming with marketing gurus, were they second to a 12-person game studio? Gabe knew that the software landscape was changing and he decided he wasn't going to be left for dead.
He contacted id Software and offered to port DOOM to Windows 95 for free and release the source code to them. Gabe led a team to successfully port DOOM, showing the world that Windows was a viable gaming platform. He knew then that this was his calling, that this was a portal to the future of entertainment. After 13 years of producing Windows, he left a 'Microsoft Millionaire' and with a head of steam, went on to co-found his own video game studio, Valve. The rest is history.
A scholar, a gentleman, and a king amongst men, Gabe is a man that even half of his life's accomplishments is something other game developers only hope to achieve.. he is man truly worthy of his legendary status.
Even if Episode 3 isn't coming out.
