Squid Game Season 2 Has Been Confirmed for the Third Time, for Some Reason

Get ready for even more bloody recreations of classic childhood games, as Squid Game has been confirmed for Season 2… for the third time.

Today’s announcement comes from Netflix’s Twitter account, where the streaming service teased the season with a quick video. The announcement also came with a message from series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, who wrote, “Gi-hun returns. The Front Man returns. Season 2 is coming.”

Dong-hyuk follows up by sharing that we’ll get to meet Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su. Young-hee is the giant, robotic little girl responsible for all the carange in the first game of Squid Game.

It’s no surprise that Squid Game, Netflix’s biggest series launch ever, is coming back, but it’s not exactly a new announcement. Last November, Dong-hyuk confirmed that season 2 was on its way. While details then were sparse, Dong-hyuk did promise the show’s main protagonist, Lee Jung-jae’s Seong Gi-hun, would return.

Earlier this year, we heard, again, that the series would be back. This time it was Netflix co-CEO and Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos saying “The Squid Game universe has just begun.”

Squid Game was a huge breakout hit. It reached over 214 million subscribers last year and is estimated to be worth $900 million. Last year, we awarded it IGN’s best television show of 2021. In our review for Squid Game, we said it’s “a candy-coated battle royale that thrives on making its players — and audience — squirm.”
