Jason Momoa to Star in an Apple Series About War and Colonization in Hawaii

Jason Momoa is set to write, star in, and executive produce Chief of War, a new limited series for Apple TV+ that will delve into the history of Hawaii.

According to Deadline, the project marks the first time Momoa, who is of Hawaiian descent, has written for television. He’s joined forces with Thomas Pa’a Sibbett to pen the script for the historical drama, which will follow “the epic and unprecedented telling of the unification and colonization of Hawaii from an indigenous point of view” across the series’ eight episodes.

Momoa, who is starring in the series, will serve as an executive producer alongside Sibbett. The duo will be joined by several other executive producers, including Francis Lawrence, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, Erik Holmberg, and Doug Jung. Jung is also attached as showrunner, with Justin Chon currently in negotiations to direct the first two episodes.

Chief of War is to become the second project headlined by Momoa for Apple TV+, following his recent turn in the post-apocalyptic drama See, which takes place in a world where most of humanity has been wiped out by a virus, and those who have survived are now blind. Momoa stars as Baba Voss, the father of twins born centuries later with the mythic ability to see.

Apple TV+ chose wisely when it selected See as one of its launch titles back in 2019, as the series stood out from the pack of genre-based television series with its “strong character development, world-building, and some well-placed action setpieces.” The show aired its second season in 2021 and has already been renewed for a third season.
